Hundreds of shacks get raised to the ground during South Africa’s winter season.
The Paraffin Safety Association says a ban on illegal low-cost burners will go a long way in preventing South Africa’s notorious shack fires.
It is calling on authorities to take tough action against businesses who sell illegal paraffin lamps claiming they are unnecessarily endangering the lives of the poor.
On Saturday during the unveiling of new houses designed to be "paraffin safe" in Du-Noon the association’s Phumzile Nteyi accused traders of being ignorant to the plight of the poor
Fifty shacks were destroyed in a shack fire in Alexandra in northern Johannesburg on Thursday.
“One of the major causes that attributes to that is illegal paraffin appliances that are being used and sold in South Africa,” says Nteyi.
