The National Consumer Union has welcomed a probe by the Competition Commission. The probe aims to seek the real reasons for the increase in food prices.
Pick ‘n Pay, Woolworths, Spar and Shoprite are among the leading supermarket chains being investigated for alleged price fixing. The probe was launched after concerns were raised in various quarters, especially the agricultural sector.
The unions Ina Wilken says the investigation should have been carried out a long time ago.
According to reports, Woolworths Chief Executive Simon Susman, said the probe is “ not about price fixing but testing anti-competitive and pro-competitive effects of certain practices”.
