Addressing Parliament yesterday the Chief Whip of the African National Congress Mathole Matshekga said Parliament will devote an hour and seven minutes to community service on July 18 to mark the first Mandela Day.

The big celebration of this day will be held in the Eastern Cape, where Nelson Mandela was born.

Government ministers and Parliament’s top official are expected to do a community service in the province.

Members of Parliament will be leading this campaign within their communities.

And it is also called on the people around South Africa and abroad to perform a selfless task to help their communities.

Mandela will be celebrating his 91st birthday on this day and his 67 years in politics.

This day was proposed by the Nelson Mandela Foundation and approved by President Jacob Zuma.
