Police accused of being out of touch with township crime

The Institute of Race Relations has accused the police’s senior management of being out of touch with the reality of life in the townships.

This follows Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa and national commissioner Bheki Cele’s expression of shock over the hijacking of a British couple in Gugulethu.

Anni and Shrien Dewani were hijacked last weekend and the car was discovered with Anni’s body the following morning.

The Institute’s data has shown that over 700 people were murdered in Gugulethu since 2005.

This amounts to one murder every two-and-a-half days for five consecutive years.
