Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union has welcomed the arrest of a court orderly for  his alleged involvement in an attempted escape by awaiting trial prisoners, while they were being transported to Johannesburg Prison.

Three prisoners were killed and several others wounded when the door of a police truck was blasted open.

The officer from the Randburg Police Station was arrested for allegedly smuggling the explosive device to the prisoners who would then have escaped.

Popcru spokesperson Theto Mahlakoana said “Popcru is disappointed in the implication of a police member in the blast that caused death and may have lead to the escape of awaiting trial prisoners.”

Mahlakoana said the progress of the investigation is good, and hopes that it will ensure that an event of this nature does not happened again.
