As part of an ongoing Mayoral initiative to commemorate the commitment and sacrifice citizens of Cape Town made during Apartheid, Executive Mayor Dan Plato has started plans to construct a memorial sculpture.
The monument will honour those killed in Langa on 21 March 1960, when police opened fire on a crowd protesting the Sharpeville Massacre.
The proposed memorial will be located near the main traffic circle on Washington Street, Langa. This is the location where thousands gathered in defiance of a ban on public gatherings.
The Langa Memorial Project was initiated in 2006, but planning was postponed after difficulties. A Steering Committee is now in place to oversee completion of the project.
