The University of the Western Cape's Professor Extra ordinaire Kader Asmal has been appointed by the United Nations to serve on two UN bodies.
Asmal a former minister of education will serve on the UN board for children’s fund and the WHO. Asmal retired from government in 2004 after serving as cabinet member for ten years.
Professor Asmal will serve on the Strategic Advisory Group on fields such as water, sanitation and water management for the United Nations Children’s fund as well as the World Health Organisation.
The university’s spokesperson Luthando Tyhalibongo said the former ANC MP accepted the appointment and Asmal was quoted as saying the challenge ahead is a frightening one.
The group will comprise of independent experts who will advise these institutions on the directions to follow to meet international targets in the national provision of water and sanitation to also meet the targets of the Millennium Development Declaration of 2000.
