Thousand of residents spent a miserable night after heavy rains caused flooding in many areas. Many people have been assisted by the disaster management in Gugulethu, Brown’s Farm, Hanover Park and Ocean View.

Some residents had to be moved to community centres. The N-1 near Paarl and the M-3 near Constantia were also flooded.

Liesbeeck and Black river burst their river banks yesterday flooding Rondebosch, Newlands and Observatory. The M5 freeway had to be closed in both directions because of flooding.

About 2000 people were evacuated from shacks in Ocean View and taken to community hall. Another 800 people from Gugulethu were also affected by the flooding and were given hot meals by the Red Cross.
