As heavy rains pummelled the city this past weekend, the Red Cross Society has come to the aid of thousands around the Peninsula affected by the storms.
“Yesterday alone, we helped about 6 000 people, whom we attended to with food parcels and blankets,” said Stephen Meyer, Chairperson of the Red Cross Society.
The worst hit areas were the Overcome Heights near Lavender Hill, Strand, Phillipi and Gugulethu where homes were flooded in “ankle deep water.”
The Red Cross also provided shelter for displaced children.
