New HIV prevention introduced

The International Aids Convention which is taking place in Vienna has come with new ideas to combat and control HIV/AIDS.

There is an HIV gel that is said to be one of the biggest breakthroughs in HIV prevention.

Tests were conducted to 900 HIV negative women in KwaZulu Natal and the results showed that the gel protected 40 percent of the women from contracting the pandemic.

It has been reported that the microbicide gel could save up to 800 000 lives and prevent about 1.3 million new infections over the next 20 years.

This is an amazing breakthrough because this is the first prevention for women that has worked.

This gel now has created a deeper interest for prevention research.

The difficult step now is for the gel to get funding so that it can be distributed to as many women as possible and maybe create another gel for men.

Getting funding will be extremely difficult now since it has been reported that funding for HIV and Aids could be cut by donors around the world in the years to come.
