The outbreak of avian influenza last year had ostrich farmers worried.

On Thursday the Western Cape Agriculture Department announced that the epidemic has been brought under control.

The Department’s Wouter Kriel said there is still a lot of work to be done because the export market is still closed.

Kriel also said that some of the farms need to be re-registered and probably the export market may begin in 2014.

About 90 ostriches have died since the outbreak of the epidemic which was detected in the Eastern Cape and the Western Cape.
