Police are said to have fired rubber bullets to disperse thousands of farm workers protesting at the De Doorns in the Western Cape’s Hex River Valley.

The N1 highway between Worcester and De Doorns has had to be closed and motorists are being diverted via Ceres.

Around 30 hectares of vineyards have been set alight in what provincial spokesperson Andre Traut is calling a wage dispute between farm workers and owners.

Traut says the area is being monitored by police , yesterday six people were arrested for public violence.
