A 29-year-old police constable was on Monday night shot dead in Dawn Park while attending to a domestic dispute compliant.

It is alleged that the dispute involved a man and his mother in-law and when the man saw the police he fled on foot.

The police officer then chased the suspect.

Police Spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini said when the police confirmed the man he continued to run into an open field and a fight ensued. The 29-year-old police officer was then overpowered by the suspect and he was shot in the head with his own gun.

Dlamini said the officer died on the scene and later the suspect was arrested.  He is expected to appear in the Alberton Magistrate Court soon.
