The Western Cape Department of Education has identified 49 underperforming schools to improve in mathematics and language skills.

Ministerial Spokesperson Bronagh Casey said several interventions have been introduced to assist these schools and the number of underperforming schools has declined in recent years.

Casey said the districts and the schools have to submit a detailed plan on how are they going to turn the situation around.

Casey added that the focus is on improving mathematics and science at schools and the department will be working closely with the schools to ensure that they improve.
