Over 57,000 South Africans has signed a petition calling for government to set up a Commission on Sexual Violence, as well as establish a special fund to prevent gender-based violence.

The Coalition to End Gender-based Violence is also calling for Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan to include in his speech on Wednesday, a pledge of R10 billion over 10 years to prevent and fight violence.

Sonke Gender Justice Aadielah Maker said they are asking for the commission to report to the president and to have power to subpoena and to hold government departments accountable for the lack of plans that have been implemented to address the issue of gender based violence.

“We are asking for the commission to make a recommendation that various departments could implement and make sure that we have speedy implementation of plans to address this violence across departments” Maker said.
