The Eastern Cape Department of Health has called for a thorough investigation into alleged arson at an initiation school. It is understood the blaze may have been started by a community member.

Eleven initiates were rushed to the Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital in Mthatha on Saturday after a fire ravaged their camp and five of them are in a critical condition. Initiation schools have been in the spotlight recently.

At least 49 people have died since the start of the winter initiation season from botched circumcisions.

The Eastern Cape Health Department’s Sizwe Kupelo said, they don’t want the police to take this incident lightly.

It has to be investigated seriously.
