The Kenya National Union of Teachers wants the government to declare the shortage of teachers a national disaster.
Knut has also vowed to organise a parents' demonstration to demand the hiring of more teachers. The union's first national vice chairman, Mr. Wilson Sossion, called on parents to be ready to join the teachers for the strike "any time after the August 4 referendum".
There is a national shortage of 66,000 teachers in Kenya. Sossion says the severe shortage of teachers is no longer a Knut versus the government affair, it is an issue that needs urgent attention.
