Today, the Provincial Government gazette will be publishing the draft regulations pertaining to motor vehicle license fees, which are currently proposed to be an increase of 5.3%.

Minister of Transport and Public Works Robin Carlisle said that although it is not required by law, the proposed increase should be subject to a full public participation process.

During the 2001 and 2006 period, these fees were increased on an average of 10 %, and since 2005 the Western Cape has not increased the fees while other provinces had.

“The Western Cape Provincial Department relies on vehicle licenses to: build, upgrade and maintain provincially owned road network; assist municipalities to fund the maintenance of their more strategic roads and to reduce maintenance backlog” Carlisle said.
