The Food and Allied Workers Union has called for an urgent redistribution of farms that are unable to pay minimum wages.

Fawu said some farm owners who have applied for exemption with the Department of Labour from the new minimum wage of R105 a day are essentially delaying paying the minimum wage.

People Against Suffering Oppression and Poverty Director Braam Hanekom said there is an urgent need to redress injustices of the past.

Hanekom said government does need to subsidize farms they are clearly underperforming and this should clear be under land reforms.
