Gender separation in prisons under the spotlight

Western Cape MEC of Community Safety Dan Plato said he is concerned about police who are not following standing orders on gender separation in police cells. 



This is after reports emerged that a woman and her 1-year-old child were made to share a police cells with two men.  MEC Plato said police need to uphold basic human rights. 



Ministerial Spokesperson Greg Wagner said Minister Plato will be asking the Western Cape Police Commissioner General Arno Lamor to investigate the matter and take the necesarry disciplinary action.



“MEC Plato said the detention appears to be in violation of section 13(1) (b) of SA Police Service Standing Order 361 which provides that males and females are never to be detained in the same cell,” Wagner added.
