Over 17000 ID 's issued during Voter Registration weekend

The Department of Home Affairs has thanked all South African citizens who went to their offices to apply for Identity Document over the weekend.

The Department had all its offices opened throughout the weekend to assist applicants with their applications and that was done to speed up voter registration for the Independent Electoral Commission’s voter registration.

Departments` Director General Ronnine Mamoepa said their entire Home Affairs front office staff compliment was on duty to deliver services to the public. mobile units were utilised to reach out to citizens particularly in areas where the department does not have a footprint

Mamoepa added that on both Saturday and Sunday, Minister Pandor and Deputy Minister Fatima Chohan visited and lend support to Home Affairs operations in the Free State, Western Cape and Gauteng provinces including paying house visits to deliver IDs in some instances.

“The services we provided included the issuing of uncollected IDs both in our offices including paying visits to the homes of some applicants to deliver these enabling documents,” Mamoepa said.
