The Western Cape traffic
authorities were out in full force over the weekend. The officials held
roadblocks across the province.
They stopped 2 524 vehicles and 1 150
drivers were tested for alcohol. Western Cape Traffic Chief Kenny Africa said
several drivers were arrested.
Africa said a total of 37
drunken drivers were arrested most in Mossel Bay area and six
public transports were impounded.
Meanwhile several motorists were searched and arrested for the possession of drugs
and stolen goods.
Africa said eight people
were reported dead in the Western Cape over the weekend
and all these fatalities occurred in separate accidents. Africa said some
motorists were prosecuted in the mobile courts.
Africa further said a
total amount of fines that was issued was R 1 95 300 and some drivers were
prosecuted for exceeding the speed limit.
