The African Christian Democratic Party said it supports the decision by the Portfolio Committee on Women in the Presidency to withdraw the Woman Empowerment and Gender Equality Bill for further consultations.

ACDP MP Cheryllyn Dudley said they have been saying that the legislation will do more harm than good.

Dudley said gender equality begins with education and decent jobs and not more legislation.

Dudley said a decision has been taken to withdraw the WEGE Bill to allow a new bill to address the issue of ensuring that there is sufficient consultation which has been a major problem with the previous bill being prematurely brought to parliament.

“According it will not be on imposing quotas but on mechanisms to eventually achieve gender equality in the work place Dudley added.
