The Congress of South African Trade Union expressed its shock and outrage at the fact that it cost R84 million of taxpayer’s money to keep the Gautrain running.

Cosatu Spokesperson Patrick Craven said from the outset the union has condemned the spending of such huge amounts on a transport system that will only serve the rich, because it will be far too expensive for the majority of commuters.

Craven said nobody can be able to predict when if ever the Gautrain will become self-sustaining could mean that we will be paying the substitute forever.

“So it will reinforce our determination to campaign for a transport system which is mainly geared at the majority of the poor communities living the in the townships around the big cities who are currently do not have good transport. We want a safe affordable and reliable transport system for all the people of South Africa and not just for the elite and rich” Craven added.
