The National Employers’ Association of South Africa said unless ways of breaking the chains in the Metal industry are found then the future of manufacturing in South Africa is bleak.

This as the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa last week rejected employer’s offer of 10%.

About 23 000 Numsa members embarked on a strike demanding a 15 percent wage increase across the board.

Nease Spokesperson Sya van der Walt-Potgieter said the strike is at the moment not only damaging to the workers and to the businesses but the economy of South Africa as a whole to the industry.

“More than 250 000 jobs have already been lost over the past few years. The strike will only exacerbate the current situation and also damage the industry itself Potgieter added.
