The African National Congress says Julius Malema has not disobeyed President Jacob Zuma. The party reported back in Johannesburg this morning on the top leadership’s lengthy meeting with its Youth League.
Deputy secretary general Thandi Modise says Zuma had only requested Malema not to sing songs that could racially polarise the country.
Therefore, Malema had not transgressed by singing apartheid-era songs.
The party is now considering the Youth League’s request that charges against its president be dropped.
Malema came under fire from Zuma earlier this month over his support for Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe's Zanu-PF and his controversial land-reform policies.
Zuma also rebuked Malema for continuing to sing violent struggle songs and embarrassing the ruling party by throwing a foreign journalist out of a news conference.
