Robin Carlisle transport MEC in the Western Cape strongly criticized the national department’s decision to allow the licensing of illegally modified Quantum vans.
The decision by the national department will allow these vans to continue operating as taxis a move Carlisle regards as an "appalling dereliction of duty".
According to him the national transport department said it would rather modify illegally converted vehicles than leave passengers without transport.
Carlisle responded by saying this reason by the department to say that trade trumps public safety is outrageous.
The provincial department has stopped issuing operating licences for the vans.
