The South African Reserve Bank says it is concerned about the circulation of high quality counterfeit 200-rand bank notes of the old series type.
The bank says these notes lack upgraded security features and the matter has been placed under specialized investigation. Reserve Bank Governor Gill Marcus says all old series 200-rand notes are being withdrawn from circulation.
She says members of the public are requested to present these banknotes for exchange at the nearest commercial bank by the end of next month.
Marcus says 200-rand banknotes of the upgraded series bearing her signature and that of her predecessor Tito Mboweni have the required security features and will remain in circulation.
