MEC of Education in the Western Cape, Donald Grant, today announced the decision to close 20 of the 27 schools which were selected for closure in the region.

The proposed closure of the schools was based on reasons varying from underperformance, lack of infrastructure and decreasing learner numbers.

Grant said government plans to subsidise the moving schools with safe and reliable transportation, utilising already existing routes or starting new routes for the learners.

Learners from the schools that will be closed will be moved to schools within in their vicinity.

The learners from non-fees paying school placed within schools with fees, government will contribute fees on their behalf for 2013.

ANC Western Cape leader Marius Fransman said this is typical of the DA’s war on poor where that party’s uncaring heart is once more exposed as well as the undemocratic and highhanded dealings with poor people.

The seven schools that were saved are the secondary schools Zonnebloem Nest and Peakview as well as the primary schools Athwood (all three Metro Central), Bosplaas (Winelands), Nuhoop (West Coast), Rodewal and Wittedrift (Eden Karoo).
