Around 35-thousand Johannesburg commuters have been stranded today as city bus drivers began striking.

Talks between the employers of the Rea Vaya bus company and the Johannesburg municipality over shifts and wages collapsed on Friday leading to 240 drivers going on strike today.

The company normally serves the city's high density townships and main industrial and commercial areas.

Company general manager Dumisani Mntambo says they plan to go to court to try stop the strike.
