A service delivery protest outside the municipal buildings in Benoni turned violent today when protesters hurled stones and sticks at policemen who stood cordoning off the building.
Police officers reportedly retaliated with rubber bullets.
Around 20 people were injured and a few of the alleged instigators of the violence were arrested before the crowd dispersed.
Hundreds of informal dwellers from Benoni’s townships marched to the offices of the department of housing to deliver a memorandum demanding houses.
