Government has today welcomed the
two life terms given to Johannes Kana for the rape and murder of Anene
Booysen.
Acting GCIS CEO Phumla Williams said
South Africans must reflect on the real impact of gender-based violence which
includes direct costs relating to health care, judicial, social and other
related services.
Williams said the sentencing sends a
clear message that South Africa will
not tolerate the abuse of women and also emphasize the importance of government
trying to protect women because they contribute more on the economy of the
country.
Johannes Kana was sentenced today by
the Swellendam Circuit Court for the rape and murder of Bredasdrop teenager
Anene Booysen in February this year.
