One person was killed and five others, including two children, suffered slight to serious injuries, when the minibus taxi they were travelling in allegedly suffered a tyre burst and rolled on the N1 between Maitjiesfontein and Laingsburg, in the early hours of Friday.
The Western Cape's Mobility Department spokesperson, Jandré
Bakker, said the minibus taxi was travelling from Langa to Centane in the
Eastern Cape.
‘’A single vehicle crash occurred at 1a.m this morning [Friday]
on the N1 between Maitjiesfontein and Laingsburg. The taxi was transporting 15
passengers - 7 males, 8 females, and 4 children – 1-year-old boy, 2-year-old
girl, 2-year-old boy, and 11-year-old boy.
‘’One person was killed and 5, including two children
suffered various injuries ranging from slight to serious injuries.’’
"The roadway is open with no delays... Drivers are
urged to check that there tyres are in a roadworthy condition and correctly
inflated for the load they are transporting, added Jandré Bakker, Head of
Communication at Western Cape’s Department of Transport and Public Works.
This is the second incident were one person was killed on
the province’s roads within 24 hours.
