Presidency Office has rejected Helen Zille`s request, to publicly debate the country’s economy with the President.

The request was sent to the President on Monday.

Presidential Spokesperson Mac Maharaj said there is an on-going dialogue between the presidency, unions and businesses to solve the country's economic problems.

Maharaj said there is no need to engage in other dialogues that may divert attention from getting stakeholders to work together.

Democratic Alliance Chief of Staff Geordin Hill-Lewis said South Africans are deeply concerned about the state of the economy.

Hill-Lewis said the president needs to do something to change the situation of the economy.
