WC weekend roadblocks

The Western Cape Traffic Department over the weekend held a total of 24 roadblocks in the region.

2 836 vehicles were stopped and 1 203 drivers tested for alcohol.

22 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence.

Western Cape Traffic Chief Kenny Africa said the total amount of fines issued during the course of the weekend was R219 700.

28 166 vehicles were tested for speed, and 2 341 drivers were prosecuted for exceeding the speed limit.

“The highest speed recorded over the weekend was 184 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N1 near Brackenfell” Africa said.

Africa added that there was only one fatality on the roads, which occurred on Friday, when a pedestrian was knocked down on the N2 near Spine Road.
