Strike averted at Illovo Sugar

The Food and Allied Workers Union has announced that the possible strike in the Illovo sugar estate has been averted.  The strike could have involved about 1 300 workers. 

The workers have accepted a wage offer of 10% however Fawu’s August Mbhele said employers need to engage with the union on other issues or they risk a possible strike action in the next bargaining season in 2015.

We have agreed that the A band from them will get 10% and the second band will get 9.5% and the third band will get 9%.

We have agreed that the casual workers will be converted from now until next year when there are places available for permanent” Mbhele added.
