Western Cape MEC of Transport and Public Works Donald Grant has condemned the burning of nineteen carriages of a train in Salt River over the weekend.

Three of the carriages were managed to be salvaged and a suspect has been arrested.

MEC Grant said the thousands of commuters that rely on public transport daily cannot continue to be held ransom by the actions of a few criminals.

Ministerial Spokesperson Siphesihle Dube said the court must assist in sending a very clear message to these criminals that their acts and their threatening of the provision of public transport will not be tolerated.

Meanwhile the African Christian Democratic Party said it is deeply appalled at the brazen arson attacks on the trains.

ACDP Provincial Leader Ferlon Christians said in three years attacks like these have amounted to R382 million and money that could have been used to enhance the train service, now has to be used to correct instances such as these.

Christians said it is a hand full of people that in orders thousands of people including our Grade 12 learners to be severally affected.

“We cannot be held captive and it is unacceptable that thousands of people are held ransom by people who have no regard for the law” Christians added.
