Police probe Barberton Prison fire

The Department of Correctional Services says an investigation into the fire that left one person dead at Barberton Juvenile Prison in Mpumalanga is underway. 

Deputy Correctional Services Commissioner, James Smallberger said it is alleged that nineteen prisoners set their mattress alight leaving one prisoner dead. 

Smallberger said internal investigations are also underway.

Smallberger said the inmates who escaped the fire will be provided with the necessary support.

Smallberger said preparations for the burial of the deceased will be done after they have engaged with the family.

Smallberger said the inmates were locked up for various offences ranging from rape and murder to burglary.

“The Correction Services minister has condemned the incident and is demanding answers from the management as to what led to the incident Smallberger added.
