W Cape traffic officers crack down traffic offenders

Western Cape Traffic Authorities over the weekend conducted 24 roadblocks across the province of which 2 539 motorists were stopped and checked and 1 5 86 drivers were tested for alcohol.

Provincial Traffic Chief Kenny Africa said during the roadblocks 39 drivers were arrested for drunk driving. 

Africa said the highest reading recorded was a reading of 1,35mg per 1000ml and that was in the Swellendam area.

We also arrested one person for being in possession of false documentation and one person for being in possession of dagga.

The total amount of fines we issued was R 283 250.

Meanwhile also during the roadblocks 11 678 motorists were tested for speeding of which 974 motorists were prosecuted for exceeding the speed limit, of which the highest speed recorded was 201km per hour in a 120 zone.

Provincial Traffic Chief Kenny Africa said over the weekend sixteen fatalities were recorded on the provinces roads. 

Africa said six drivers died in motor vehicle accidents and another four passengers died.

Africa said in the one accident one driver and three passengers died after the driver had lost control and collided with a tree.

Africa said In Wellington a head on collision occurred where both drivers died.

“In total this bring fatalities total to sixteen for the weekend Africa added.
