Fifteen people were injured this morning and one person left dead when a taxi overturned on the M1 after Grayston Road in Sandton.

ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak reported at approximately 6.30 am paramedics arrived on the scene where they found the taxi lying in the highway.  One person was found with fatal injuries.

“Three people were found still trapped inside of the taxi.” Vermaak explained.

It is understood that the taxi apparently collided with a stationary vehicle on the highway which resulted in the driver losing control of the vehicle.

The fifteen occupants of the taxi were treated for various injuries ranging from cuts, bruises and possible spinal injuries.

“The three occupants that were trapped in the vehicle were quickly extricated by members of the Sandton Fire Department.” said Vermaak.

All of the injured patients were transported to various hospitals in the vicinity for further medical care. Sadly, one occupant from the taxi was found with fatal injuries and declared dead on the scene.

Occupants from the stationary vehicle were assessed by paramedics but found that they sustained no injuries. They later declined to be transported to hospital.

Local authorities were on scene for further investigation, Vermaak concluded.
