Police arrested two men for various crimes including assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, common robbery and possession of unlicensed firearm.

Police Spokesperson Jay Naicker said the two suspects went to the Mondlo Municipal offices to buy electricity.

They attacked the security guard after an argument, he was then assaulted and overpowered during the struggle.

It is alleged the security guard’s service firearm fell off as they were attacking him. Naicker said the suspects fled with the firearm, leaving the injured security guard on the scene.

Naicker said after an investigation by Mondlo SAPS the suspects were arrested and charged after they were found in possession of the complainant’s firearm.

Naicker said the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended police at Mondlo for the swift arrests.

“We cannot allow members of the community to behave in such a manner and the fact that they deprived the security officer of his firearm is an indication of a deeper underlying criminal propensity Naicker added.
