The congress of the people has called upon the MEC of Health Dr Motsoeledi to appoint an independent investigation into infection control at Bongani Hospital, this comes after the death of five babies at the Free State hospital.

The five babies died of Klebsiella infection which refers to several types of infections caused by the Klebsiella bacteria, including pneumonia, bloodstream infections and meningitis.

COPE spokesperson Dennis bloem said “this usually happens when a hospital fails to implement strict infection control measures and we therefore are calling on the health MEC to investigate before it is too late.”
