KwaZulu Natal Commissioner Mammonye Ngobeni has condemned theft within Chatsworth police station.

This after cash was stolen from one of the offices at the Chatsworth Police Station. The cash was used to pay out claims and was kept in a safe.

Nogbeni said it was obvious from the beginning that it was an inside job as it would have been impossible for an outsider to steal from a locked safe within secured premises.

Police Spokesperson Jay Naicker said the cash was used to pay out claims and was kept in the safe.  The detectives started their investigation into the matter and a police officer based at the Chatsworth police station was detained on suspicion of being involved in the theft incident.

Naicker said a second suspect a civilian was also taken in for questioning.

“An internal investigation is also underway to ensure that those responsible for the theft of the cash are dealt with an arrested immediately” Naicker added.
