The National Union of Mineworkers has welcomed the release of the Mining Charter Assessment report.

NUM said in a statement that it is concerned about transformation in the mining industry, and the failure by the industry to reach the Mining Charter targets.

Mineral Resources Minister Advocate Ngoako Ramatlhodi said the Department will further strengthen the efficacy of the Mining Charter through a review process to accelerate the transformation imperative in the mining sector and create a conducive environment for the sustainable growth of the sector.

NUM Head of Transformation Unit Luthando Brukwe said our concern is the heart of confirmation which deals with the element of ownership, in terms of ensuring that ownership goes to previously disadvantage South Africans, especially the three elements which speaks to meaningful empowerment, in terms of the Mining Charter.
