DA concerned about the stability of the Compensation Fund

Lusanda Bill
03 October 2014

The Democratic Alliance has called on the Minister of Labour Mildred Oliphant to take urgent step and action to ensure the financial stability of the Compensation Fund.

This is after the Auditor General revealed that the entity racked up almost R139 million in irregular expenditure and over R15 million in fruitless and wasteful expenditure.

DA Deputy MP of Labour Michael Bagraim said it appears that it is completely incompetent, the office is falling apart and despite the fact that our government has spent millions of Rands on computer systems, nothing seems to be working.

Bagraim said we as a society are not protected the most vulnerable, those that are now disabled, injured on duty and have not been able to access any funding or help.

“Doctors are refusing to see patients because the fund does not pay them.  The Auditor General tells us that the fund itself is sitting with hundreds of millions of Rands that they are unable to spend because they cannot access the money” Bagraim added.
