Nehawu concerned about amendments to the Medical Schemes Act

Lusanda Bill
22 July 2015

The National Education Health and Allied Workers Union is concerned about the reported initiative by the Minister of Health.

The Minister of Health Aaron Motsoaledi plans to introduce amendments to the Medical Schemes Act. Nehawu believes amendments will harm the patients, especially those with chronic illnesses.

Nehawu Spokesperson Sizwe Pamla said the minister should be concerning himself with implementing the National Health Insurance Scheme. We have a situation where the White Paper has still not been released and the minister is saying nothing.

Pamla said the minister is not concerned about delivering access to health to the majority of South Africans but he is prepared to protect medical aid schemes that are not necessarily benefiting the people.

“We feel that the minister must re-prioritize issues instead of focusing on the medical aid scheme and their protection” Pamla added.
