Cosatu opposed to the increase Metrorail fares

The Congress of South African Trade Unions in the Western Cape opposes the fare increases announced by Metro Rail.

COSATU feels the increase is unfair, especially in light of Metrorail’s poor service.

The increase in ticket prices came into effect today.

Provincial Secretary Tony Ehrenreich said presently workers have to buy monthly a weekly ticket but the trains don’t run on time or don’t run consistently until workers have to spend more money on buses and taxis on those days.

COSATU is prepared to take action.

Ehrenreich added that COSATU is going to oppose any price increase until the train system is improved and the service more effective. Any attempts Metrorail could enforce on those price increases will see COSATU go strike to stop these increases that impoverish workers even more.
