The African National Congress in the Western Cape has welcomed the court ruling regarding the legality of micro-lenders docking salaries of farmworkers, even when they could not pay.

The Western Cape High Court ruled that pay attachment orders are unconstitutional, unlawful and invalid.

ANC’s Provincial Secretary Faiez Jacobs said this ruling is a victory for the poor.

Jacobs added that there is a lot of unscrupulous loan sharks that preys on people earnings and hopefully through this we are encouraging the regulatory act to help educate people and for the people can acquire officials to rescue people on debt.

“We are concerned that in the past it was unregulated and these loan sharks and these unscrupulous people could have extort people.” Jacobs said.
