Western Cape MEC of Health Nomafrench Mbombo
is launching programs in July to help address the growing number of mental
health issues in South Africa.
The campaign focuses on prevention and
early detection of mental illnesses.
Ministerial Spokesperson Colleen Smart,
said in the Western Cape we have seen an increase on these cases and the
majority of them is aggravated by the high level of substance abuse cases.
“This causes severe burden in our
facilities and we need to obviously accommodate a large number of patients
suffering from acute mental illnesses, and this is why the Western Cape
government has priorities alcohol and substance abuse as a strategic goal going
forward” Smart added.
