The bodies of the 20 some illegal miners will probably never be recovered.
It is believed the miners were killed by a rock fall at the old mine east of Johannesburg.
The bodies of the men from Zimbabwe will be left underground at the old Gravelotte mine near Benoni, after rescue workers deemed it unsafe to try and retrieve the bodies.
A spokesperson for the mine Christo de Klerk says it is too dangerous to continue searching for the bodies as the ground is unstable.
He added that a rock fall crushed the men, trapping their bodies under a massive rock more than 300-metres beneath the surface.
